The Mediocre Mountain Biker
США
Добавлен 17 мар 2016
Welcome to The Mediocre Mountain Biker Channel. What started out as a humble experiment has grown into a modest channel. Here you will find mountain biking rides, trail guides, maybe some gear related videos (but not really gear reviews), and an occasional travel/adventure video that's not so MTB specific. I'm just a regular guy with a regular job with an amazing family. Sit back, relax and have a great ride, be safe, and be kind to each other.

65 Mile Mixed Terrain Doughnut Quest | 2024 Pastry-Bike-Pastry
The Pastry-Bike-Pastry is an annual mixed terrain ride (not a race) hosted by Pedal & Spoke in North Aurora, IL. This ride involves riding out from the shop into the country on both paved and gravel roads. Participants can choose from 25, 50, 65, and 100 mile routes. Our intrepid group selected the 65 mile route which might have been 15 miles too much for me.

Three different relatively short climbing trails bring you to the top where you can choose between at least 9 downhill oriented trails. Location?
Headed to Galena this weekend and considering going. Rideable on a serious hardtail?
I’ve seen plenty of hardtails out there. Everything is rollable or has a chicken bailout line. I tried following Josh from @chickensendies when he was on a Manic hardtail and I couldn’t keep up!
Any tips to not bail on Gravity Cavity? I went down about half way down... lol. It was much steeper with exposed roots than what I anticipated. Thanks and great video
I’d say take the gnarlier parts a little slower while practicing a neutral position. The brain tends to make you push away from the perceived danger but that unweights the front tire which can result in a washout. If you’re doing the drops off the walls, I’d avoid that last log roll - it’s bucked many of us since it comes right after the second drop.
Did you video more trails at palos? Thanks for sharing
I do have a whole Palos playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLLHrBfNwqEQ1pwIYUBM4dFBJbhJK1LHu1&si=10u_zn20LzqOvtNV I do need to add more videos showing our new trail Resurrection.
What's the best day/time to ride there other than weekends? Looks empty on your run
@@decoherence926 in general, the afternoons are less busy on all days except Wednesday. We have a standing group ride on Wednesday afternoon/evening which anyone can join. Weekend mornings are busiest with traffic typically reducing after noon.
I havnt heard this song in forever. Thanks for reminding me of it c:
What a great video! Just what this beginner needed!
Thanks for sharing,
Nice!!! This is my favorite trail in AZ. Mesquite climb, willow section back down. If you’re in great shape this trail is beautiful!!! Back when I was racing MBAA this was my climb trail for the week!
My father raced an Allard sports car here for Fred Wacker back in the day. Since I just got back into Mtb'ing (I'm 60) it will be fun to ride this. It will also be the only time I will have been able to ride where my dad raced.
I'm assuming you had to run them all night long? How did you deal with the batteries? Did you run an external battery pack for most the rice?
I only ran 2.5 laps in the dark. I was suffering from some bad chafing. You can run an external pack to supplement the internal battery. For the fire road sections, I only ran the handlebar light and it was on the lowest setting. I would have run the fire roads in the dark but it was a new moon and absolutely dark w/o lights.
I've been eyeing the 1 up rack for a while and like most things about it but a couple days ago I saw one set up for 4 bikes at the local bike trail and all the wheel lock rods were leaning away from the car as if they bent over time. It didn't have bikes on anf the owner wasn't there so I didn't get a chance to ask about it. Did not give me a good feeling that the bikes would always be leaning. Any 1 up owners have experience with this?
You mean the arms that fold down onto the wheels/tires? I don't think I've ever seen those bent.
Is there camping facilities near by
We camped at Palace campground in Galena, which was overpriced IMO. We might try Blanding Landing next time but I hear it is next to busy railroad tracks.
Visited today on a trip from FL. Awesome place. I found a Raleigh 3-speed like I had as a kid, and a Schwinn Continental 10-speed like my brother had - in the early 1960's.
It’s amazing how many different types of bicycles they have!
Trails are awesome, only thing that sucks is when the elderly hike the downhill trail and everyone almost dies.
Woah, that would be scary for both parties. Usually for mini bike park type trails they don’t allow hiking or there are hike specific trails because of the high bike speed.
@@TheMediocreMountainBiker all but a few if the trails here are multi use and bi directional
65 miles, goodness
We almost died! 😂
LOL @ 0:25 "...and we are quite spread apart now" = we are definitely not roadies cause we have no idea how to ride together and draft! Maybe next time??
We had paceline training on our gravel ride yesterday. 😛
Big ride for us non roadies!!
Holy cow some of those trails run super fast eh? Looked really fun!
Yea, pretty fast. Probably worth a return trip to really session some of my favorites and get comfortable with the ones we only got one run of.
Looks like some fun trails!
I have a few set of Pulstars. Love em
I wish I had a bike to put them on!
That looks killer fun. Fitchburg = funsburg
Got mine in the other day and set it up. I REALLY like the little ball that tightens the fit inside the hitch, since I can't stand when things wobble & rattle. However, after seeing the dinky hitch lock that comes with it, I don't get the best sense of security so I've been searching for beefier alternatives and I believe I have a simple yet effective idea.
whats your solution? I'm looking for the same thing
@@DavidandLynnTownsend-xx1lv I should have it implemented within a week or so. I'll let you know how it turns out
I bought a padlock that fits through the hole. It's and ABUS Titalium but it does hang a little low so it's taken a few hits. My rack is a little loose in the tilt bar - it becomes pretty apparent when I hit a dip in the road as the rack bounce up. Bikes stay in the rack though.
@@DavidandLynnTownsend-xx1lv I have part of it done, the rest in another week probably
Hey now I know how much that refridge cost brother
I think you've kinda missed the point of them, they offer an alt hand position for long rides, which will prevent hand and wrist fatigue, the question is, do you actually need them, as you can just rest your hand on top of the grips in flat sections, what they provide is an anchor point to the bar, which you don't have when simply wresting your hand on top. I'm stuck between these, Spirgrips and SQLabs, although the latter 2 come with a weight penalty unless you stump up the cash for the carbon versions, which I'm not sure I want to do, also very few reviews out there
I think my friend had the SQlab grips on his hardtail which I’ve tried but also thought they were extraneous. This bike typically doesn’t see long rides of smooth straight trails - is usually on twisty singletrack with ride no longer than 20 miles. I could see merit in these inner bar ends for a flat bar gravel bike - they just don’t benefit me on my singletrack bikes.
@@TheMediocreMountainBiker yeah I get you, I guess it's a tool for a specific task, although having researched some more, the typical flat bar hand position does put a lot of pressure on the nerves in the hand and wrist, that plus your body weight and trail chatter is what causes the issue with flat bars. I ride the Thames path from where I live in to Central London and back as my training run, which is around 40 miles, I'm pretty much sold on needing a solution, just need to identify the right solution at the right price. I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of Spiregrips I think
Bar ends have more benefits than risks. The risk very unlikely. They stop your hands from getting broke and amputated when smashing trees or ground or when you were doored which is when someone open their door on when your riding along cars. My friend had his finger amputated because he was doored by a driver who didn’t check their mirrors. I wear bar ends after that.
how much elevation per lap?
I added my links to the Strava recordings in the description, but my iPhone recorded between 670 and 690 feet of elevation per lap.
I really Enjoy your videos. I could call myself the same name, but 70 years old. I did the novice race in 2023, the muck... I officially beat 2 riders, but many didn't finish the second lap. I hope I never ride in mud again! I live on Archer across from the Palos triangle. Hope to meet you someday. Maybe you should have some shirts made with your Mediocre logo, and do all the videos with the same "look".
That mud was brutal and climbing Grass Hill was also exhausting!
Oh. and I do have shirts at my merch shop - which I have a few of. 😀 themediocremountainbiker.myspreadshop.com/
It was a hell of a good bike I raced my rts many times in the 2000s and still use it as my work bike
Im a local and i just rode this on an old schwinn mesa runner! My first time mountain biking. I want to go back out but its been raining.
I'm not loving the look of this trail, but it was nice to get some summer vibes on this miserable wet day.
Yea, my assessment puts it in the “nice to hit up if you happen to be in the area” category.
@TheMediocreMountainBiker Would you recommend Proving Grounds over this one?
Definitely ride Proving Grounds over IPP.
Ha ja lol
Hahaha. Looks like somebody is a SRAM fanboy.
pretty cools trails for being in Iowa, also there's a really good brewery in Dubuque called Toppling Goliath 🍻🍻
We spent a lot of time at Galena Brewing Company in Galena where our campground was. The burgers next door at Durty Gurts were fantastic!
Toppling Goliath brewery is in Decorah, IA - not Dubuque and worth the trip - plenty of bike trails there too
@@johnwrycza gotcha my bad, I commonly get toppling Goliath out here in SoCal thru Tavour & it’s totally worth it
Great video...and that was cool of John Deere, cool trails.
1:53 i slammed into that wall
Ooof, that’s a pretty fast part too!
@TheMediocreMountainBiker yeah happened Monday my shoulder still a bit purple
it looks weak, the force that would tear the teeth would also tear that protection or bend it and scrape the gear ring, only once in 40 years have I destroyed 2 teeth
I've folded over an Absolute Black oval ring but I think that's more of a design weakness rather than failure from impact. The bash seems pretty sturdy to me but we don't really have sustained high speed runs here.
Was going to take a Peoria trip and hit comparable, then Indy. That order or reverse it? Also, any other must rides in the area?
Give Dirksen and Ft Creve Coeur - I didn’t have a chance to ride those but I heard they were also fun. I’ve ridden. Farmdale a few times and it’s just not all that exciting for me anymore.
@@TheMediocreMountainBiker thanks! Comparable meant to say Comlara.
@@shawneggers4484 I haven’t ridden Comlara so I can’t say
Southwestway is a hidden gem!
Any update video coming? Considering buying one new from my LBS.
I like mine a lot. Shimano GRX 400 isn’t that great but ok. I now have WTB Riddler tires, much better rolling. I’m running an REI top tube bag and a Revelate half frame bag now to hold a jacket and snacks. The Revelate fits ok but the long steerer tube makes the bag fit weird. It’s not the lightest gravel bike but works very well.
i literally love pittsburgh!! if anyone lives there, here’s some tips (i used to live there) restaurants: (my dad owns all of these) Round Corner Cantina El Burro 1 El Burro 2 Umami Cobra THEY ARE ALL AMAZING also if your looking for a good corner/smoke store, Carson News on carson street is the best! my yiayia owns it
I bought one but have never installed it. I’m local and ride the same trails as you and have never had a need for it locally.
There’s been a few times with a downed tree that I feel I can ride over but it would’ve smashed my chainring - so now I think I can try those without penalty now.
I think I need one. But the extra grams!!! 😂
It's not a road bike so you can get away with extra grams for your safety.
Oh ik where that is
Well. You missed the best stuff. 😢
Oh no, where’s the good stuff at??
There are so many roads in Pittsburgh that are like this. I implore you that if you are a new Uber driver to stay away from the South hills 😂
Looks like a ton of fun!
Hi Jason! Good timing, we were just talking about heading out that way after our Fay and Kickapoo trip last weekend.
I’ve heard good things about Dirksen and Fort Creve Coure (sp?) too, nearby.
Rode there a few years ago. I said many of the same things as you about the climbs 😂 It was a fun trail though. Peoria has some fun systems!!
